St. John's Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church Please Help Us Rebuild.. (click here for Hurricane Sandy pictures) Hurricane storm Sandy swept across the state of New York and New Jersey, on October 29th and 30th 2012, ripping down residential homes, church buildings, business centers, power lines, utility poles, trees and anything in its path causing severe damages. The storm also caused severe flooding in low lying shoreline communities across Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City. Unlike other hurricanes, tropical storms and nor'easter that have wrecked havoc in the borough over the past several years, hurricane storm Sandy left a mark that the residents of Staten Island will never forget.
St. John’s Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church, situated at 522 Mill Road, Staten Island, New York, is a member parish of the Malankara Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church in North America. This is a congregation of less than 30 families that was established in 1984. The church building at 522 Mill Road was purchased in 1996 from a society of American Catholic Christians and since then we have been conducting our worship in that beautiful church. It is very painful to mention that the church building, along with other neighboring structures, was not spared by the wrath of the hurricane. The surge caused flooding of about 10 feet high inside the church, damaged all valuables and moved the structure of the church from its foundation. The cost of all damages are currently being assessed. Along with others in the neighborhood, we have lost everything. Our Archbishop His Eminence Mor Titus Yeldho Metropolitan visited the damaged church building on Sunday, November 4th and extended his support , prayers and also informed our sister parishes to support us. These sort of calamities can hit anywhere and anytime in any form which is beyond our control and power. We are determined not to give up hope, faith, and loyalty to Our Lord Jesus Christ and we want to rebuild our church and worship the Almighty without interruption. The church is currently trying to negotiate with the insurance company, who initially denied our claims on property insurance. FEMA also denied support due to legal restrictions. As some of you may know, it is not within our limit alone to rebuild the church. Therefore, we kindly request your generous contributions, support and helping hand in this matter. Please remember St. John's Parish and its members in your daily prayers. Thank you. Sincerely, The St. John's M. S. O. Church Family. Please click on the link below to make a donation via PayPal.
